Real estate sales representatives can cater to many different clienteles. While certain sales representatives choose to specialize in a market, some are a one-stop shop for all your real estate needs and others choose to get licensed to simply sell to their relatives a few times a year. With over 37,000 registered real estate sales reps in the GTA to choose from, it can be hard finding a place to start. Selecting a sales representative with the right experience, knowledge and background is essential to finding the best fit for you and your home.

A great place to start is with your network of family and friends. Asking your friends for referrals of positive real estate professionals they have worked with can give you great insight about the industry. West End Homes recommends you interview at least 3 realtors to ensure you have a good understanding of the types of services out there.

During your interviews with these realtors, you should be asking questions like:

  • How many years have you been licensed?
  • How many deals did you close in the last year?
  • What are your statistics in terms of prices negotiated for sellers and/or buyers?
  • What marketing methods do you use? And where will my home be advertised?
  • Will staging be available? And what other selling features do you provide?
  • Can you help me find other professionals during this process? (Ie. Home inspectors, mortgage brokers, lawyers, etc.)
  • May I review the documents that I will be asked to sign?

If the realtor you are interviewing is unable to answer these simple questions about their trade, it could be a sign for bad things to come. Unfortunately, just getting licensed to trade in real estate doesn’t automatically make you a seasoned expert – you need years of active experience for that!
